Blood and plasma donation now more inclusive of LGBTIQ+ individuals
TRANSCRIPT Australia's economic relationship with China on the Prime Minister's agenda during his visit to Shanghai... The blood and plasma donation rules in Australia changed to be more inclusive of LGBTIQ+ individuals... Belgian Tim Merlier wins stage nine of the Tour de France. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says there is still room to improve and grow Australia's trade and economic relationship with China. At a roundtable of Australian iron ore producers and Chinese steelmakers in Shanghai today Mr Albanese is expected to deliver a speech calling on China to address an oversupply of steel in the global market. He is expected to acknowledge both countries efforts to advance decarbonisation, but also the need to work together to address global excess steel capacity. Mr Albanese there are meetings scheduled - during the 6-day visit to China - that will be important for Australia's economic future. "There are important meetings to be had this week and the fact that I am leading a very large business delegation speaks to the importance of the economic relationship between Australia and China. We know that one in four Australians jobs depends on our exports. And China is our major trading partner with exports to China being worth more in value than the next four countries combined." Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, says he is still hopeful about the chances of a deal on a Gaza ceasefire. He says he is about to meet a Qatari delegation on the sidelines of the FIFA Club World Cup in New Jersey in coming hours to discuss the ongoing Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal negotiations. Meanwhile, deadly Israeli airstrikes continue to claim the lives of dozens of Palestinians. Eight United Nations agencies warned over the weekend that without immediate fuel access, critical services in Gaza could collapse. Hospitals, sanitation centres and food distribution operations face imminent shutdown. Economic development expert, Nour-El-Din Abu Ajwa, told SBS Arabic that people in Gaza are growing desperate. "People see the truce talks as a lifeline and a halt to the Israeli killing machine. Gaza is no longer liveable. There is no drinking water, no food, no homes, no public services, no universities. Everything is gone. People are exhausted by hunger and the daily death." European and Mexican leaders have vowed all necessary measures to counter the latest tariff decision made by the Trump administration. US President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that 30 percent tariffs will be imposed on the European Union and Mexico starting from August 1. Mexico's foreign affairs and economy ministries says the US move is unfair and Mexico would defend its own interests. French President Emmanuel Macron called on the European Commission to demonstrate its determination to defend its own interests. German chancellor Friedrich Merz says he has been talking with other leaders about the need to come up with a solution. "I discussed this intensively over the weekend with both Macron and Ursula von der Leyen; and with the US President on Friday. We want to use this time now, the two and a half weeks until 1 August, to find a solution. And I am really committed to this." Around 625,000 more Australians will now be able to donate plasma from today. Plasma - is now the donation type most needed by Australian patients, with treatment for more than 50 medical conditions reliant on its supply. Previous donor rules prevented many people from the LGBTIQ+ and sex worker communities from donating plasma if they had sex within the past three months. The changes mean most HIV negative people who take antiretroviral medication to prevent HIV will be able to donate plasma without a wait period. Lifeblood says the changes make Australia the first country in the world to remove all sexual activity-based restrictions on plasma donation. In cycling, Belgian rider Tim Merlier* [[Merl-lee-air]] powered past Jonathan Milan to win stage nine of the Tour de France - his second stage win this year's race. Merlier stayed glued to Milan's wheel before unleashing his kick metres from the finish line. Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey and maintains a 54-second lead over Belgian Remco Evenepoel in the general classification. Merlier paid tribute to Evenepoel as team leader in helping him achieve the win. " Normally I need to help him, so when he has a tailwind he don't feel relaxed. He can move up easily. Me and Bert were also there to let him in again. And we tried to protect each other as much as possible. But thanks to Remco of course, also."
